Recently, we were invited to go into the country. I attended Farm Day sponsored by Redland Organics, an annual open house event for Bee Heaven Farm. Everyone was encouraged to bring a dish made of local organic produce to the community potluck. Additionally, there were hay rides, fresh veggies, herbs and honey, and the opportunity to stop at a modern “out-house.” As a city mouse, an out house is simply not part of my vocabulary but after drinking two cups of lemongrass tea, which by-the-way was very refreshing, I had no choice but to tinkle the tea away. Let’s say it was an experience far from what I imagined. Thank goodness for modern toilets because I was too conscious of the natural surroundings. This is not an activity that I have ever done outdoors, not even when I have gone camping.
Back on the event … It provides knowledge and awareness of our local environment and what the Redland produces locally and pesticide free. It is a family oriented atmosphere filled with great people, delicious foods, beverages and live music. This year, Jennings and Keller, a folk band from Homestead, cheered Farm Day with beautiful and environmentally conscious tunes.
Things to keep in mind: Bee Heaven collects a voluntary $10.00 donation at the gate, which helps Bee Heaven sponsor the Art Loves Farm program for students. This year, the artists in residence from D.A.S.H. learn about farm life, environmental ethics and how to apply their involvement to their art.

Thanks for attending FArm Day. Sounds like you had fun. Yes, the outhouse is very nice, isn’t it? Just want to clear up a couple of things. One, it’s Redland, not Redlands — no S. Redlands with an S is a town in California. And two, the art students from DASH are not to be confused with the agricultural volunteers/interns/apprentices who are working on the farm. Two different programs. The artists are not farming — yet! The student farmers (some of them) are the ones going on to have their own farms.

I think that these type of events are fantastic. They give people the opportunity to see what great products organic farmers are growing, and it is another way to celebrate life and nature. Go Green!
